Wellington parkrun will not be participating in Christmas run
Wellies parkrun Event #19 – Saturday 6th February 2016 - by Cherona Vlok
Our 19th parkrun event saw Wellington parkrunners smashing 2 new records.
The first was an attendance record of 185 runners who came out on a Gorgeous summer morning to enjoy our scenic route at Imbuko Wine Farm, and the second record was broken by the same man who had set the record the previous weekend at our event #18 at 17minutes 35seconds. Sive Ngubo now holds the record for the fastest time on our route (again) at a Whopping 16 minutes and 57 seconds !!
That is going to be a hard record to beat but I’m sure, with cooler weather on its’ way, that we’ll have a few contenders for that title on our hands.
With all the talk on setting and smashing parkrun time records and PBs’ each week, let’s turn our focus and give Thanks to our parkrunners who come out to support us each weekend, catch up with a buddy, soak up some sun and work on their fitness in their own unique way …
We find that we are frequently welcoming tourists from near and far to our beautiful region and parkrun route and had the pleasure of having Laurence Messer all the way from the UK at Wellington parkrun on Saturday. Laurence enjoyed our route immensely, even with the exceptionally warm morning, and had this to say via email :
“I would just like to thank you and the other volunteers at Wellington for making me so welcome on Saturday. You were all most supportive. Although I have completed 185 parkruns at 21 different places Wellington was both the most scenic as well as my slowest. Running through vineyards and round a dam with wonderful vistas made it very special. You warned me about the hill and I thought you were exaggerating and it would be an incline that I could run slowly up. It just shows how wrong I was! I hope to return to Wellington next year and look forward to seeing you then. I will put in some serious hill training in preparation!” - We look forward to welcoming you back Laurence.
Can you feel it ? Can you feel the parkrun Love ?
These parkrunners sure can …
… And with that in mind, please remember that we celebrate Valentines Day this coming Saturday at parkrun.
Wear your pink, red and white and come and show us a little LOVE

With the expectation of cooler weather, 152 participants arrived to challenge our hill /bult! Unfortunately someone forgot to tell Wellington that it was supposed to be cooler and we ended up with another scorcher of a day!
The event was supported by 33 first timers as well as a number of guests. We were visited by a veteran parkrunner Tracey Rankin who has completed a whopping 216 parkruns! Thank you for visiting Tracey! She definitely found our hill extra special!
We had one of our very dedicated youth runners, Divan (pictured above with Tracey) in second place showing the men how it’s done – looking forward to seeing you out in front again Divan!
Chad Lahana from parkrun Big Bay came through for the challenge but admitted the heat was slightly higher than he was used to – I think we will probably have to wait until the cooler months before we see him return ……
That being said we had 2 guests from England who ran a week before in -2 degrees – talk about acclimatizing! As you can see he managed to give our camera man a smile.
As always our very dedicated volunteers were en route to shout encouragement and direct the way!
The dogs made a pitstop at the Dam to take a dip and have a reprieve from the heat.
This young man ran all the way barefoot and determinedly made all 5km without once being assisted by his dad- even up the hill, well done!
Despite the heat we had 28 personal bests – can’t wait to see what times they do in the cooler months.
Wellington parkrun is growing every week and it is a pleasure to welcome you all every Saturday. Thank you for your support and to our volunteers – you are awesome, we couldn’t do this without you.
Remember folks, parkrun is for EVERYONE – please bring your family, friends, colleagues and furry babies along for an hour of fresh air and sunshine. Let’s keep up the momentum and get everyone you know to come out and enjoy one of the most beautiful parkrun’s in SA!
A few reminders – bring extra water, a sun hat and sunscreen and please keep your furry friends on a leash – one per runner. If you have some extra time, join us for an iced coffee, or if you are a die hard coffee drinker – a hot coffee afterwards.
SEE YOU NEXT WEEK!!

Can you believe it's December already? Us neither.
10 !! T E N !! WOW 10... Thank you to one and all, volunteers, runners, walkers and some crawlers. You guys are amazing.
114 Runners braved the early Wellington heat on our beautiful route at the picturesque Imbuko Estate. Well done to you all whom set up new PB's and to those who came close, don't quit, you will get there.
Remember to bring along those water bottles, caps and some sun protection.
Volunteers always happy to show you in the right direction, even in scorching temperatures.
Now that everyone is going into holiday mode (the lucky ones), the malls get busy (with that elusive Boney M song repeating itself over and over in your head) and the kids nagging you they're bored, we wish you a festive and blessed holiday season. If you're traveling, be safe. We can't wait to have you back on your route. If you are staying home, see you every Saturday in December.
If you are still looking for that perfect gift to give your loved one, look no further. Scroll down to the bottom of this post. No need to thank us, you attendance is more than enough.
