St Francis parkrun will not host an additional event on Christmas Day 2016.
St Francis parkrun will not host an additional parkrun on New Year's Day 2017.
The inaugural St Francis parkrun, held on 13 July 2013 at the St Francis Links, kicked off with an amazing 226 runners and walkers - the most ever at a parkrun launch in South Africa. St Francis parkrun also had the most new registrations for the week world-wide.One of the youngest participants was Emma Humby (5), who finishest a short while before the oldest participant, her grandma Wendy Humby (78)! In true parkrun spirit, participants were from all walks of life, ages, race, gender and ability.
The 5km route includes paved roads through the St Francis Links Estate, and is one of only two wheel chair friendly parkruns in the country.
Event Directors Eric and Esti Stewart were extremely pleased with the support, and hope that this parkrun will grow into one of the biggest in South Africa. "Thank you very much to each and every one who realised that this is a great opportunity to test your fitness levels in the outdoors. Let's see who can improve on their times and get a PB on the score sheet next week!" said Eric.
"A big thank you also to the Links, Jeff and Liezl Clause for the venue, as well as Roland Peacock, Marie Louw, Nicol Stewart, Sian Hamilton-Brown, Mickey Freund, and Mike Stark, our first volunteers. Not to forget the assistance of Bob, Pat and Sammy Norris as well as Bruce and Gill Fordyce, who stayed with us untill all the glitches were sorted out, as well as the sponsors who makes parkrun possible."
"We also want to thank The Dune Ridge Guest House and 39 Canal Road, who sponsored accommodation for the Norris and Fordyce families during their stay in St Francis."
Bruce, Gill, Bob and Pat enjoyed their stay so much that they have decided to return to St Francis on 9 August to participate in the Enid Pretorius Properties Trail Walk and Run, a 26 km trail run through St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis. "They will also be in Port Elizabeth for the launch of the parkrun at Hobie Beach on 10 August."
The St Francis community is honoured to be part of the parkrun family, and extremely pleased to be the fourth Eastern Cape venue.
