Roodeport parkrun
We have a treat in store for athletics fans as the great Zola Budd will be running this Saturday’s Delta parkrun. Zola was twice World Cross Country champion so she should love Delta parkrun! Our sponsor ‘Blue Label Telecoms’ will also be there to welcome you.

Many of our runners will be travelling down to the Comrades marathon next week. We wish them luck for the Comrades marathon.

Delta and Roodepoort parkruns will continue to run over the Comrades weekend as usual. We need your help! Please contact us if you are free to volunteer by emailing DeltaOffice@parkrun.com or RoodepoortOffice@parkrun.com.

Thanks to Randburg Runner for their generous support in giving Delta and Roodepoort a monthly prize. Both Delta and Roodepoort will be giving prizes this Saturday.

Please encourage family and friends who are not running to take photographs for the web pages. Please remember that the success of your parkrun and its webpage is dependent on your input. We also encourage feedback from our runners.

Happy Running!

Event News

David AshworthRoodepoort parkrun has grown considerably since its launch just over four weeks ago. We now have well over 100 registered parkrunners. Event number 4 saw the largest contingent of runners to date. Despite the chilly weather, there were 47 finishers including Bruce Fordyce and many new faces. We have had a huge response to our request for volunteers and this is most appreciated and welcomed for the successful hosting of parkrun.

With Comrades just around the corner, many runners will be away over the first weekend of June. Roodepoort parkrun will however take place as usual and we invite all who are not going down to Natal, to attend on the 2nd of June to make this yet another successful and social parkrun.

This Saturday we will be giving away a pair of running shoes, courtesy of the Randburg Runner. In order to stand a chance of winning this prize, you will need to be a registered finisher at this week’s Roodepoort parkrun. We will draw the winner from finishing position tokens after the event on Saturday. The winner will be notified by email.

Come along and enjoy an easy run as part of your pre-Comrades taper. We look forward you seeing you there!

Feedback from the field

parkrun has made all the difference for me. I had never participated in any sport, not even at school, and during November 2011 with the ticking crocodile snapping at my forty something heals and having overcome a gezillion huge personal challenges, I decided to find a big hairy audacious goal that would just be completely outside of any of my points of reference.

In a coffee shop over a cup of tea I went on-line and entered the Two Oceans Half Marathon. That was the easy part. Then came the homework. For 18 weeks I spent every day with challenged and aching muscles. Training was difficult and boring.

In January somebody told me about the Delta parkun. I entered my first run and came last. Last! The next week I tried again and came last again and then I took my huge Great Dane with me for company and I came last again.

But the process and environment built my confidence and I decided to join a running club. It helped having someone to run with on the longer runs which have now become part of my programme. On the 7th April, in torrents of rain and freezing cold weather, I completed the Two Oceans Half Marathon. It was the biggest achievement of my life.

Without parkrun and the unthreatening environment it creates for the realllllly fast and competitive as well as the reallllllly slow and trying, I would have never run up that mountain.

Thank you parkrun!

I've put aside the Saturday mornings for parkruns on a permanent basis, so am available to run or volunteer for any date every couple of months.

Thank for a wonderful experience every Saturday.

A few weeks ago I visited Randburg Runner to ask for some advice about a heart-rate monitor and after a long chat about Asthma, breathing and running, pulmonologists, professors and tests at universities, and Bruces' mom's chocolate cake... etc, Andy told me about parkruns.

This was the best piece of information he gave me. I registered, entered my first parkrun at Delta Park, and now I've done 10!

My times are slow, but my aim is to complete the course without any walking by September 2012. I know I will succeed

Kind regards,
Ursula Wong

SA Newsletter 1 May 2012

Welcome to the SA newsletter

In this newsletter we welcome South Africa's second parkrun, Roodeport parkrun and we hear from the Event Director, David Ashworth.

On Saturday we were delighted to launch our second parkrun on a beautiful autumn morning in Roodepoort’s Len Rutter Park. 42 parkrunners and 6 volunteers helped to make this a memorable launch. The Roodepoort parkrun is a testing two lapper with something for everyone. There are some tough ascents and some fast descents and the route includes stretches of grassveld, gravel road and a short concrete path. The run crosses a stream and passes a miniature railway line and station.

After the run first timers spoke excitedly about their experiences and we have no doubt that this parkrun will go from strength to strength. There are already 111 registered parkrunners at the Roodepoort parkrun. Well done to David Ashworth and his team.

Roodeport parkrun

At the same time our flagship parkrun at Delta Park attracted 75 runners and this despite the fact that many runners were away on a long weekend public holiday. In total we now have 824 registered parkrunners in SA with a number of other parkruns to be launched in the next few weeks. Our Delta parkrun has attracted a number of overseas parkrunners and of course they are always more than welcome. A source of real motivation for our parkrunners has been the occasional visit by a guest wearing a beautiful red adidas “50 parkruns” shirt. We are delighted with the number of first timers we get every Saturday morning. We’ve come a long way since parkruns was launched in South Africa in November.

We would like to thank our sponsor Blue Label Telecoms and our supporter Randburg Runner. Without them there would be no parkrun in South Africa.

Happy Running!

Roodepoort parkrun

In February this year I met up with Bruce and Gill Fordyce in Len Rutter Park in the hopes of starting our very own parkrun in the Roodepoort area. At the time, we were not sure where we would start or finish the run, nor did we know whether the run would consist of a single 5km or a double lapper 2.5km course. Over the following three months we plotted various alternative routes before settling on the current course. Planning the route required us to gather feedback from runners by doing test-runs each week leading up to our launch.

This Saturday, 28 April 2012 saw the official launch of Roodepoort parkrun. Forty-two pairs of legs, associated with many faces that I did not recognise, lined up at the start of the inaugural event. It was greatly encouraging to see so many runners attending the first parkrun. Prior to the start, Bruce Fordyce and I briefed the eager runners on the route and elaborated on the concept of parkrun. Without hesitation they were off! Runners, walkers, moms, dads, and dogs, you name it, they were there!

Winners of the first Roodepoort parkrun (and current record holders) are Bruce Fordyce (21:09) and Tracy Rankin (27:45). There lies the gauntlet... come and join our event.

Feedback from the field

Dear parkrun,

Thanks to Comrades legend Bruce Fordyce and his team of friendly helpers for my 3 Delta Park parkruns while visiting Johannesburg. It's quite different to my normal Sheffield Hallam parkrun, with it's 80 metre climb reflecting the general terrain of Johannesburg. Unlike the Sheffield Hallam parkrun, it's virtually all off road and the combination of altitude and summer heat was definitely a change. You probably won't run your fastest 5k at Delta Park but it's a really enjoyable run and helps build a bit of speed, despite the hills.

Good luck to Bruce and his team at parkrun SA, especially through the holiday periods when much of Johannesburg disappears to the coast.

Regards, Ian Cooper, South Yorkshire Orienteers

Wow! I'm amazed!!

Thanks a lot for a great run, Delta team!!

Hi Guys

Thank you for running the hardest parkrun I have ever participated in. My local one, Blackpark, is snooker table flat. Thanks for that.

Bernd

Delta parkrun’s monthly prize winner for April was Matthew Futcher with thanks to ‘The Randburg Runner’.
