Hermanus parkrun Event #221 18 January 2020

What a lovely morning for a parkrun with cooler weather after the welcome rain yesterday with more to come. The sound of the baboons could be heard as we walked the route. Happy to hear them but relieved they did not appear on the route.

This week 315 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 45 were first timers and 28 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 12 different clubs took part. The event was made possible by 26 volunteers.

Congratulations to Lynette King from Bellville parkrun on completing her 100th parkrun at Hermanus parkrun today.

We were happy to welcome international visitors from Austria, Australia, London and Sweden and included with our South African visitors were parkruneers from Bellville, Strand, Rondebosch, Route 44, Centurion and Springbok.

Thank you to our volunteers for the wonderful support provided each week and thank you also to the parkrunners who volunteer each week to fetch and walk/run our HAWS Animal Shelter Dogs who enjoy the outing.

Hermanus parkrun Event #220, 11th January 2020

In a nutshell: this week 415 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 36 were first timers and 39 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 13 different clubs took part.

A beautiful virtually cloudless day with a very light breeze was forecasted for today. Pleasant conditions in the Hemel and Aarde Valley setting the scene for 415 participants and 30 volunteers for parkrunday 3 of 2020.

Two of the international visits are Peter Watson and Judy Brown, both from the UK yet no strangers to Hermanus parkrun. Amongst the 76 visitors we welcomes SA tourists Roger and Cindy LEES (North Beach) as well as Gareth and Cheryl CORNELISSEN (Root 44) on their first visit to Hermanus. Other visitors are representative of a wide range of SA parkrun events. The most experienced parkrunner in the field is Alison TURRILL (Kayamandi) and WC Regional Ambassador. Alison, thank you kindly for the visit and the words of encouragement to the core team. It is always a pleasure to have you around.

Congratulations to our first finishers of the day, Leon Brandon Dube and Kayla SMITH. Kayla is a participant in the junior age categories. Both Brandon and Kayla recorded a personal best time.

Heartwarming is that Brandon run with one of the dogs of HAWS - Hermanus Animal Welfare. The HAWS dogs are normally accompaying volunteers to HAWS to provide exercise to some of the suitable dogs and they are on normal leads and not necessarily on Canicross leads that is associated with dog-assisted running.

Well done to Hanco VAN UYTSEL being the first male in the junior age categories to cross the finish line. Samantha JACKSON is the flag bearer for senior women.

We celebrated milestones of
- Rodney Ackermann – v25 Club
- Gert Kok – 100 Club
- Johann Schutte – 50 Club
Well done and congratulations!

The buzz of the week is about Resolution Day, people acting on their new year’s resolutions. Hermanus parkrun had 27 new registrations of parkrunners and more important than that this is the fact that in the field today we had 15 first time parkrunners spread over 11 different age categories. May you be forever attracted to parkrun henceforth!

To summarize participation today:

15 Real First Timers (4%)
76 Repeat Visitors (18%)
217 Repeat Homerun (52%)
107 Unknown (26%)
30 Volunteers

Thank you to the dedicated team of volunteers who present parkrun to us 53 and possibly 54 times a year. Without volunteers we cannot present parkrun and without participants there is no cause for volunteering – together we do parkrun! Rodney completed his first 25 days of volunteering. We also celebrate with Emmie Gouws and James Luckhoff 50 days of volunteering. Our most experienced volunteer in the field today is Alan Paulick (regular photographer) who dedicated 185 volunteer days to Hermanus parkrun to date.

Volunteering IS a work of heart. We invite our parkrun community to do as Gert Kok did today – please join our volunteer group – you will not be overburdened, you will receive training and guidance and you are guaranteed to meet new friends.

“parkrun is a force for good that unites us. And it reminds us that given a chance, people want to help each other, and themselves, to be better” - Paul Sinton-Hewitt

Hermanus parkrun Event #218, 1st January 2020

In a nutshell: this week 217 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 27 were first timers and 42 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 18 different clubs took part.

Yet again Mother Nature served the Hemel and Aarde Valley with glorious weather where a group of passionate parkrunners could meet to get the New Year started in fabulous parkrun style!

Amongst the crowd we welcomed both international (5 UK events, 1 Canadian event) and local visitors from 34 different events. Heartwarming about the 99 visitors is that the majority are repeat visitors, back in Hermanus for their parkrunfun. Also noteworthy is that one could recognise clusters of families and friends amongst the participants. We also recognise visitors from other areas such as Australia.

Congratulations to our first finishers, Wepener van der Walt and Melanie Joubert. It has been a while since the first finishers are both from our homerun. Wepener did it on 14 occasions and Melanie 22 times. They previously crossed the finish line as first finishers together on 20 January 2018.

Kudos to the first finishers in the junior age categories. Nicolas Prinsloo and Marlien du Preez.

We celebrated Adele Joynt’s 50th parkrun. Congratulations Adele and thank you for sharing your milestone run with us on this special New Year’s Day run.

Acknowledgement of presence of a particularly high number of SA Tourists in the field, including the freshly capped home runners Peter and Carol Wallis. The most experienced participant was Patrick Saal with his roots at Delta. Patrick has done 272 parkruns at 25 different events. Over and above his running, Patrick volunteered in 155 volunteer roles including that of run director. Well done and thank you!

A huge shoutout to our own awesome group of volunteers, thank you for making our 3rd and most successful New Year’s Day run possible:
