A very windy start to Leap Year parkrun day at Hermanus parkrun yesterday. This week 266 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 44 were first timers and 30 recorded new Personal Bests. There were visitors from UK, Germany and Australia. As well as visitors from other parkruns in South Africa, there were also family and friends of people taking part in the Hemel & Aarde Valley marathon. Dorothea Deschermeier, our German visitor, set a new record in the category VW80-84. Well done Dorothea!!!

Congratulations to Angelique Mowers as well as John and Mary Moat on celebrating their 50th parkrun yesterday and to our junior Harry McConnell on completing his 10th. Your certificate will be handed out as soon as we obtain new certificates.

Hermanus parkrun Event #221 18 January 2020

Congratulations to Lynette King from Bellville parkrun on completing her 100th parkrun at Hermanus parkrun today.

We were happy to welcome international visitors from Austria, Australia, London and Sweden and included with our South African visitors were parkruneers from Bellville, Strand, Rondebosch, Route 44, Centurion and Springbok.

Hermanus parkrun Event #220, 11th January 2020

In a nutshell: this week 415 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 36 were first timers and 39 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 13 different clubs took part.

A beautiful virtually cloudless day with a very light breeze was forecasted for today. Pleasant conditions in the Hemel and Aarde Valley setting the scene for 415 participants and 30 volunteers for parkrunday 3 of 2020.

Two of the international visits are Peter Watson and Judy Brown, both from the UK yet no strangers to Hermanus parkrun. Amongst the 76 visitors we welcomes SA tourists Roger and Cindy LEES (North Beach) as well as Gareth and Cheryl CORNELISSEN (Root 44) on their first visit to Hermanus. Other visitors are representative of a wide range of SA parkrun events. The most experienced parkrunner in the field is Alison TURRILL (Kayamandi) and WC Regional Ambassador. Alison, thank you kindly for the visit and the words of encouragement to the core team. It is always a pleasure to have you around.

Congratulations to our first finishers of the day, Leon Brandon Dube and Kayla SMITH. Kayla is a participant in the junior age categories. Both Brandon and Kayla recorded a personal best time.

Heartwarming is that Brandon run with one of the dogs of HAWS - Hermanus Animal Welfare. The HAWS dogs are normally accompaying volunteers to HAWS to provide exercise to some of the suitable dogs and they are on normal leads and not necessarily on Canicross leads that is associated with dog-assisted running.

Well done to Hanco VAN UYTSEL being the first male in the junior age categories to cross the finish line. Samantha JACKSON is the flag bearer for senior women.

We celebrated milestones of
- Rodney Ackermann – v25 Club
- Gert Kok – 100 Club
- Johann Schutte – 50 Club
Well done and congratulations!

The buzz of the week is about Resolution Day, people acting on their new year’s resolutions. Hermanus parkrun had 27 new registrations of parkrunners and more important than that this is the fact that in the field today we had 15 first time parkrunners spread over 11 different age categories. May you be forever attracted to parkrun henceforth!

To summarize participation today:

15 Real First Timers (4%)
76 Repeat Visitors (18%)
217 Repeat Homerun (52%)
107 Unknown (26%)
30 Volunteers

Thank you to the dedicated team of volunteers who present parkrun to us 53 and possibly 54 times a year. Without volunteers we cannot present parkrun and without participants there is no cause for volunteering – together we do parkrun! Rodney completed his first 25 days of volunteering. We also celebrate with Emmie Gouws and James Luckhoff 50 days of volunteering. Our most experienced volunteer in the field today is Alan Paulick (regular photographer) who dedicated 185 volunteer days to Hermanus parkrun to date.

Volunteering IS a work of heart. We invite our parkrun community to do as Gert Kok did today – please join our volunteer group – you will not be overburdened, you will receive training and guidance and you are guaranteed to meet new friends.

“parkrun is a force for good that unites us. And it reminds us that given a chance, people want to help each other, and themselves, to be better” - Paul Sinton-Hewitt
