Voortrekker Monument parkrun closure

Voortrekker Monument parkrun's iconic setting

With great sadness, we bring you the announcement that our nearest neighbour, Voortrekker Monument parkrun, will be finishing in early 2017.

Event Director, Wendy Yates shared this statement:

"As the saying goes "ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO A END". And so with a heavy heart, I must say our time here with Voortrekker Monument Park will end with our last parkrun being on the 28th Jan 2017. VTM receives no government funding and must generate funds to cover all the costs at VTM. As our parkrun gets more popular and increases in number this then interferes with there events and normal business.

But the GOOD NEWS is we hope to have a new venue starting with Valhalla and Freedom Park the two most likely to take over. We have also started early discussions with other places for new venues, since we clearly need more parkruns in Pretoria."

Thank you to our Volunteers

We need volunteers each week to put on our free event. If you are a regular parkrunner, please consider volunteering two or three times a year to ensure the event can continue to take place. Each job is very easy and you get to be part of a very friendly time. Email botanicalgardenhelpers@parkrun.com to put your name on the list.

Cancellations

We are very grateful to the Botanical Garden for allowing us the use of their facilities every week. Where other events also take place in the Garden, we have to assess whether there will be an impact on the safety or viability of our parkrun and as a result we sometimes have to cancel the parkrun.

We always do our best to avoid cancelling the parkrun, and only ever do it as a last resort. If you want to check whether a parkrun has been cancelled at the last minute, please check our Facebook page, where information will be posted. You can also check this news page, where a red banner will appear at the top if the next parkrun is cancelled.

August 2016 at Botanical Garden parkrun

We can only apologise for the last-minute cancellation on 6 August and the short notice for the cancellation on 13 August. These were out of our control, but please rest assured that we are taking steps to ensure we are notified well in advance of any cancellations. These will be communicated both on the top of our news page and on our Facebook page. Please note that we are cancelled on 10 September.

Despite the false starts, August proved a very successful month at Botanical Garden, with 1,962 parkruns completed over two weeks.

Start time of parkrun

We have noticed a worrying trend whereby a growing number of parkrunners are starting the course early. This is unfair to other parkrunners, who do not receive a position which fairly reflects their performance. If you are found to be doing this, you will not receive a result for that parkrun and your previous parkrun times may be reviewed. Our volunteers are happy to wait for walkers who start the parkrun at the correct time, so there really is no reason to start early.

parkrun starts at 08:00 and you must complete both laps of the course to be given a time.

July 2016 at Botanical Garden

The cold weather in July didn’t put parkrunners off getting their fix at Botanical Garden. It seemed to encourage some impressive times as Nadia POTGIETER once again beat her own course record on 16th July, completing two laps in a very speedy 19:06.

July 2016 at Botanical Garden

Our parkrunners also set 816 new PBs during the month, with 963 new people coming to join us for the very first time over the course of the month. Congratulations go to everyone who completed the course during July. A special well done to Estian EEK, Marco RUTHVEN, Jonty MORRISON and Dihan MATTHEE, who were our male first finishers this month. Dihan achieved this feat twice! Congratulations as well to Emily YEO and Joane LE ROUX, who joined Nadia as female first finishers. Nadia was also a double first finisher during the month!

New Volunteer Club Members

We had two new members join the Volunteer Club this month. To become a member of this club, you have to volunteer on 25 different occasions. Our two new members have both made invaluable contributions to Botanical Garden parkrun. They are Ilana WAIT and Heather CAMPBELL.

Botanical Gardens parkrun 564

Ilana (in pink) and Heather (far right) at parkrun with Bruce Fordyce

Ilana was the founding Event Director of Botanical Garden parkrun, putting in months of hard work to get the event established. Quite simply, without Ilana, there would be no parkrun at Botanical Garden.

Heather has been a member of the core team since the early days of Botanical Garden parkrun and recently became our volunteer coordinator, working hard behind the scenes to make sure we have enough volunteers to have a parkrun each week.

Mad Hatters parkrun

Our first parkrun in August, on Saturday 6th, has a 'mad hatters' theme. Come dressed in your wackiest hat and run or walk the full 5km to be in with a chance to be judged the maddest hatter and win a health breakfast for two at the MilkPlum restaurant.
